After nearly 25 years, wikipedia is still the internet we were promised—created by people, not by machines Only www.wikipedia.org itself leads to a portal page instead of the main page of the english wikipedia It's not perfect, but it's not here to push a point of view
It's owned by a nonprofit, not a giant technology company or a billionaire. A url starting with www.wikipedia.org redirects to the corresponding one starting with en Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, created and edited by volunteers around the world and hosted by the wikimedia foundation.
A uniform resource locator (url), colloquially known as web address, [6] is a reference to a resource on the world wide web
A url specifies the location of a resource on a computer network and a mechanism for retrieving it. It's not perfect, but it's not here to push a point of view. That address on its own is redirected to the main page The page name may include a namespace prefix (such as help: in this page).
[2][3] initially available only in english, wikipedia exists in over 340 languages and is the world's ninth most visited website. It was created by jimmy wales and larry sanger on 15 january 2001, as wikipedia's first edition. A shorter form, called a (relative) url, is used when a computer could correctly fill in the full (absolute) url from context For example, of /wiki/url only works for a link on wikipedia to this page on wikipedia.
The wikipedia homepage was initially at www.wikipedia.com
This became www.wikipedia.org in june 2003 with the founding of the wikimedia foundation and then on 10 january 2005 this url stopped redirecting to the english wikipedia at en.wikipedia.org and became a project portal for the many wikipedias in various languages The internet archive 's wayback machine has extensively saved the main.
